Women and girls suffer disproportionately from domestic abuse, sexual violence, rape, stalking and harassment, forced marriage, so called ‘honour’ based violence, female genital mutilation, prostitution, trafficking/slavery and pornography. These violence against women crime types are internationally recognised as a violation of women’s human rights and as a significant cause and consequence of gender inequality. Women and girls face multiple forms of discrimination on the basis of their race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, ability, gender identity and other factors, which also have an impact on women’s experiences of violence, their perceptions of those experiences, and their ability to seek and receive support. We are calling for action to prevent violence against women and girls in Wales and a change to the attitudes and systems that perpetuate it.
