Welsh Women’s Aid Statement on X

Welsh Women’s Aid has been reviewing its position to remain on X (formally known as Twitter). The platform has become an echo chamber of hate and a few months ago, we began to review our presence there. We decided that, in order to reach as many audiences as possible, we would remain on X. This was a difficult decision taken in order to be a voice for survivors in a space that was often triggering, problematic and used as a tool of harassment.

However, in light of X’s failure to address the use of Grok to perpetrate tech-facilitated abuse and child sexual abuse material, Welsh Women’s Aid have made the decision to cease using the platform outside of signposting to our Live Fear Free Helpline.

Tech companies who continue to allow their programmes to be used in this way must be held accountable. Creating images of child sexual abuse and creating sexual images of those who do not consent is not free speech. It is tech-facilitated abuse.

We will continue to monitor all of our social media channels to ensure that the platforms remain in line with our values and mission.
