Yesterday, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the UK would face a General Election on Thursday 4th July. This pivotal event, which is just six weeks away, will give voters the opportunity to have a say in who represents us in the UK parliament.
In the past few years, the tone of political discourse has become increasingly polarised and divisive. The importance of respectful and responsible campaigning is vital if we are to give everyone the opportunity to have equal representation. In the next few weeks, Welsh Women’s Aid will be publishing guidance on how to be responsible when campaigning.
Words hold immense power and it is crucial for prospective representatives to wield this power responsibly, ethically and with empathy. The challenges and barriers facing the people of the UK today are significant and should not be trivialised or used for political point-scoring.
In anticipation of a general election, Welsh Women’s Aid published the ‘Change That Lasts for Wales’ manifesto that seeks to prioritise violence against women and girls, domestic abuse and sexual violence (VAWDASV) for the next UK government.
Our manifesto looks at six key areas:
- Support for Migrant Survivors and abolishing the policy of No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF)
- Whole systems approach to prevention to VAWDASV
- An effective use of the justice system
- Affordable and Adequate Housing for Women
- A Benefits System that works for all, including survivors
- Legislative Reform
We believe that if the next UK government were able to prioritise policy in these six critical areas, it would significantly and positively impact the lives of survivors across Wales. By addressing these key issues, the government can create a safer, more supportive and preventative environment for survivors, fostering a society that actively works to prevent violence and abuse.
Let’s ensure that our election remains focused on constructive conversations that are led by mutual respect and a motivation to create a change that lasts for all.
