Statement on South Wales Fire and Rescue Service

“We are appalled to hear about the recent allegations of abusive behaviour, uncovered by ITV, at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The power of journalism which centers the voices of those with lived experience is really demonstrated here- however it should not take media exposure for accountability to take place.
Hearing the testimonies of those that have come forward, we are disappointed to hear that their reports were not taken seriously. Everybody has a right to feel safe in their workplace and in their home. We stand in solidarity with the survivors who spoke so bravely of their experiences, and of all survivors of harassment, of abuse and violence.

While these upsetting accounts are the latest to come to light, they are sadly not isolated incidents and speak to a culture of systemic misogyny and sexism within the very establishments whose function should be to protect and support. Nobody should be exempt from consequence.  We are pleased to hear that an independent review will now take place to review culture and disciplinary processes, but this must result in demonstrable, sustainable, cultural change.

We are pleased to hear of the swift action that White Ribbon UK have taken in suspending the services White Ribbon accreditation, a space which allows misogyny and sexism to thrive is not a safe one.

We stand with all survivors, their right to be heard, and their right to safety.
