“We are appalled by the recent news regarding the sexism, discrimination and harassment that women face in the Welsh Rugby Union. We stand in solidarity with the survivors, and of all survivors of harassment, of abuse and violence.
Everybody has a right to feel safe in their workplace and in their home. Welsh Women’s Aid’s #NoGreyArea Report shows that four out of five women in Wales have experienced sexual harassment at work. This is completely unacceptable. There must be an end to sexual harassment in all workplaces across Wales, and the toxic culture that enables this.
While we note the Welsh Rugby Unions condemnation of the harassment that has come to light, it is swift reflection and dedicated reform that is needed. This must go beyond statements and gestures to robust and transparent actions that will tackle the systemic causes of this problem.
Head of Public Affairs and Communications Sophie Weeks said:
“We know how pervasive sexual harassment is within workplaces. Survivors have spoken to us about their experiences within traditionally male dominated industries- the embedded misogyny and sexism that is unfortunately still woven into the culture of such spaces must be challenged. For as long as this behaviour is excused or dismissed, we will not see it decline.
As a minimum, everybody has a right to feel safe at work, we also have the right to be respected, treated with equity, be ambitious and thrive.”
Welsh Women’s Aid urges all organisations to take swift and comprehensive action against all forms of violence against women to ensure that everyone can feel safe at work.
